Safety Tips:

Around age 5, establish a password with your child so that they won't get in the car with anyone without the password. It's important to reinforce that your child never tell anyone what the password is. Children are often very eager to share if you ask them (and that's just what a predator would do if the child mentioned a password).

Never let your child go to the bathroom alone until age 14 or 15. The deputy told us about a boy who went into a public bathroom, alone, while his aunt waited outside. He was sexually assaulted and strangled during the 5 or 10 minutes that she waited for him. Horrible.

Teach your child that if they are ever lost in a store or public place, they should stand in the same place and not go looking for you. You'll be looking for them the minute you realize they're lost and your first inclination will be to go back where you last saw them.

If your child is ever picked up/abducted by anyone they shouldn't be with, teach them to scream, as loud as they can, "THIS IS NOT MY MOMMY/DADDY." The deputy noted that kids often cry with their own parents, so seeing an adult carrying a crying child doesn't get a lot of attention. Never teach them to yell fire (that won't be taken very seriously). But, this isn't my mom or dad will get attention fast

Have a plan in place. Role play scenarios with your child and they'll know what to do. Otherwise, they could freeze (the deputy referred to that young girl who was abducted on the street--FL and it was caught on video tape a year or so ago. The perpetrator just walked up to her and within a minute had lured her away. She froze and went without a fight.)
